Access reference — Culebra Range / Cielo Vista Ranch¶
Quick-reference for the southern Sangre de Cristo (Culebra Range) private-access situation, so southern-Sangre planning doesn't re-derive it each time.
Researched 2026-06-09 across all sources: 14ers.com + listsofjohn.com + peakbagger.com (logged in) + climb13ers.com + web (CFI, Cielo Vista Ranch site, 14ers forum). Note: Cielo Vista Ranch is in the Culebra Range = southern Sangre de Cristo, not the San Juans — a common mix-up.
The boundary¶
The ranch (formerly Taylor Ranch; ~83,000 acres; since 2017 owned by Wm. Harrison / Cathexis Holdings) sits on the west side of the Culebra crest. Its eastern boundary is the crest itself, running from De Anza Peak (north) to the NM state line (south). From Maxwell Mountain southward, land on both sides of the ridge is private — stay east of the crest on the public peaks, and trespassing is actively prosecuted.
Ranked peaks by access¶
Public — climbed from the EAST (Blue Lakes / Cuchara, Pike & San Isabel NF) ✅¶
No ranch dealings; stay east of the crest. (Peakbagger "Land" = Pike & San Isabel NF on all four; matches our verified Trinchera-group report.)
- Trinchera Peak, "Leaning South" (+ Leaning North), Cuatro Peak, Mt Maxwell (PT 13,337)
On Cielo Vista Ranch — paid access only 🔒¶
Corrected 2026-08-03 against 14ers TR 22021 (supranihilest, climbed Jul 2022, report updated Jun 2024) — the most current collected access beta. The earlier version of this page had PT 13,569 and PT 13,226 under the main ranch HQ; they are in fact in the north / Whiskey Pass group, and the fee is split geographically, not per-summit.
The 13er fee groups are defined by position on the crest relative to Culebra:
| Fee group ($500 each) | Meet at | Ranked peaks |
|---|---|---|
| North — "Beaubien through Culebra" | Whiskey Pass gate, the evening before | Beaubien Peak, Francisco Peak, PT 13,226 (= UN 13,229), PT 13,569 (= UN 13,565) (+ Lomo Liso Mtn, Miranda Peak, Pt 12,810, Pt 12,686) |
| South — "Purgatoire through Culebra" | Ranch HQ gate, the evening before | Purgatoire Peak, "Alamosito" (= UN 13,466), Vermejo Peak |
| Culebra + Red Mountain A ($150/person, separate) | North gate, 6:00 am day-of | Culebra Peak (14er), Red Mountain A |
De Anza Peak B and Mariquita Peak — do NOT attempt. The June 2024 update is explicit: they are not on CVR property and not legally accessible from it, nor from Forest Service land to the north. "There are cameras… You will be charged with trespassing." Earlier guidance that the $500 included them is superseded.
Fees / policy (volatile — call ahead)¶
- $150 per person for Culebra + Red Mountain A, via the hiking booking form. (Roach's older guidebooks say $100 + $50; it is one $150 fee now.)
- $500 PER GROUP for the thirteeners — north or south as above. Use the ranch contact form, not the Culebra booking form. You cannot pay $500 once for the whole crest: "Yes, I asked — it is still $1,000 total for all the thirteeners, even if you're capable of running the entire ridge at once." The fee includes any twelvers you can tag west of the ridgeline (east of it is Bar NI Ranch), and can include Culebra/Red as an add-on.
- NO hiking or climbing August through December — hunting season. This is the binding seasonal constraint, not snow.
- Two-person minimum for the thirteeners, and for Culebra/Red in winter. You need not know each other.
- 4WD required for the thirteeners. A Subaru reportedly reaches Whiskey Pass; the southern camp on Purgatoire's west ridge wants a 4Runner/Tacoma or better. For Culebra/Red, 2WD parks at HQ and 4WD may drive to the upper trailhead; in winter everyone parks at HQ. Snowmobiles, ATVs, bikes and off-road vehicles are prohibited.
- You are escorted in the evening before and camp on the property, so the start time is yours; only the 6:00 pm return is fixed. Late return = $100 to Costilla County SAR. For Culebra/Red the gate opens 6:00 am and missing 6:15 forfeits your spot with no refund.
- Ranch staff will move your vehicle during the day on request — which is what makes the north group's one-way traverse to Carneros Creek practical.

peak_db data bugs found (fix separately)¶
peak_db has wrong peakbagger_id/peakbagger_url for Culebra Peak (→ Mt Spalding) and Red Mountain A (→ Thunder Butte). 14ers and LoJ ids were correct.
